Jellico Mountain

Well, Avajar and I made it back safely from Chattanooga. The trip down was pretty uneventful, so we decided to stop for a photo shoot on top of Jellico Mountain.

While we were up there, I'm pretty sure I was almost murdered by a trucker and his female companion.  There were quite a few people at the pull off where we stopped to take pictures, and it was the middle of the day, so the possibility of myself and my small tree friend being captured and killed wasn't the first thing I thought of when I pulled the car over.  As I carried Avajar along the gravel walkway, I chatted with a lady who had also stopped to take some pictures (of the scenery, not of a little tree of course).  She wandered on ahead and I sat Avajar down and started to snap a few shots.  I heard the gravel crunch behind me, and turned around to see a very strange looking couple with slightly perplexed looks on their faces watching me and AJ.  I smiled politely and turned back around to take some more pictures.

"Uh, do ya know if they foun' a dead body 'round hur lately?"

I wish I had a picture of the reaction on my face to that question...

"Um, nope I sure don't," I replied, and turned around quickly, hoping they might go away if I ignored them.  At that point, I was really wishing I had some mace or something I could use to stab someone if they tried to abduct me.

Instead of going away, they just stood there behind me, watching me in silence, as I went on taking pictures of AJ.  They weren't there very long, but it seemed like forever.  Luckily, the lady I spoke with earlier walked back up to us, and the strange couple asked her if she knew where to find the dead bodies...

She answered them in the same puzzled fashion I did, and while they were distracted, I gathered up AJ and skedaddled back to the car.

Though I am pretty sure I narrowly escaped a horrible death that afternoon, I couldn't help but remember one of my favorite Bible verses from childhood:

Hebrews 13:2
"Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it."

You see, I think I may have entertained an angel that afternoon, only it wasn't the odd couple asking about corpses, it was the lady I befriended for a split second as I walked to take my pictures.  As I was strapping AJ back in his box in the car, my hands shaking a little more than usual, the lady returned to her car parked a few feet in front of mine, gave a slight wave and drove away.

I have no idea who she was, I honestly can't remember what she looked like or what car she drove.  I'll never know if she saved my life or if I was just being overly paranoid.  But I am here to tell you this little story and to remind you that the most unassuming, forgettable face may have a huge impact on your life.

Or you may have the same on theirs.
